Splendid Srilanka

There is more to Sri Lanka than Buddhist temples and palm-fringed golden beaches. Dotted with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the island has verdant jungle, an average of eight hours sunshine a day and superb tea, ideally sipped in a colonial-style guesthouse overlooking a hillside plantation. In the west, five-star resorts have sprung up alongside chic shacks on beaches where stilt fishermen make their daily catch and surfers catch a wave. On the south coast sleepy Galle Fort’s chic boutiques and annual literary festival are a blueprint for the future.

Destination Details

Kandy
Kandy is located at the center of Sri Lanka and is generally recognized as the island nation's cultural capital. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is the last kingdom of the country. Since it was conquered by the British only around 1815 you can still see the living traditions. Kandyans are usually proud of their heritage. Since the western elements has played a comparatively little role in the city most Kandyans are upholding Buddhist values. Since it is in the cultural triangle the authorities try to retain this values as much as possible. Situation had changed recently because of many immigrants coming from other parts of the country. So don't expect to find the honest Kandyans they describe in the colonial literature now. Be careful with your belongings and the people whom you associate with. But this is a peaceful city compared to most other parts of the country with a lesser crime rate.

Colombo
Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka. As the capital, it is the main financial, industrial and trading hub. With a population of about 647,100 of different ethnic groups, it boasts a mix of both the old and the new by way of old colonial buildings as well as high rise buildings and sky scrapers. The central area of Colombo is still known as the Fort, but the remnants of the colonial battlements have long since been demolished, or incorporated in newer buildings.Located in the Indian Ocean, Colombo is situated 6 degree 55 minutes N latitude and 79 degree 52 minutes E longitude on the west coast of the island of Sri Lanka.
